Movember, Grants & AI
Things that should be on your radar this month 👀
- After a brief hiatus, the NSW MVP Ventures Program is reopening for applications on December 4th. The grant offers financial support in the range of $25,000 to $50,000, requiring startups to contribute matching funds for their proposed projects.
- Concerned about cybersecurity? Small businesses will soon have access to a free self-assessment kit to help them determine their risk profile.
- As ChatGPT nears its first birthday, Elon Musk unveiled his new AI chatbot: Grok. A sarcastic ChatGPT alternative supposedly based on ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.’
- Speaking on ChatGPT, OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman was ousted this month from his CEO position…and re-hired 4 days later. It’s hard to keep up. 🫠
- The CSIRO’s R&D funding arm has expanded the qualifying criteria to the Kick-Start program, allowing businesses with a turnover of up to $10 million to apply.
The highs 📈 and lows 📉 of small business life
📉 Our shared mailbox tech, Hiver is altering its feature set across the pricing tiers. This means we’d need to pay triple the cost for the same feature set we're currently using without any additional value. We were already thinking of shifting away from them, but this latest change with just 7 days' notice has sped up our decision. It’s frustrating that we have to scramble to find a replacement and implement it far quicker than we’d like.
📈 This month Liam and Amy took a last-minute trip to Brisbane for a couple of days, catching up with Annature and Content Snare. It was great meeting over beers, talking about the accounting space, and joining an impromptu pub quiz (then forgetting to hand in answers). We also met one of our clients, Casu, for the first time over lunch. Casu is an app connecting construction businesses who need extra hands, with workers who are seeking flexible, casual work. Think Uber for labour hire! It is always a high point for us to meet our clients, and being able to work from any location enhances the positive experience and reminds us why we love what we do.
Our tech this month
🎨 We played around with Coolors, a speedy colour palette generator that automatically finds complementary colours. Warning: you can spend a lot of time here
⏺️ Move over Zoom, we’re playing with ScreenApp to record our screens, transcribe and summarise our meetings. It’s a system that watches your meetings for you and takes notes so you’re always up to date.
📅 Google is going after the Calendly market with its Appointment Scheduling feature - allowing you to let your clients/partners to book time with you directly into your Google Workspace calendar.
Productivity hack 👩💻
We were quite excited about this. We recently discovered an Excel/Google Sheets hack that lets you use ‘wildcard’ variations for text (e.g. text, tezt, texct) . It goes beyond the manual find function and can help you find text within cells even when it’s not an exact match.
